This research laboratory draws inspiration from Japanese spaces of sanctuary, where creation of a sanctuary within the confines of the existing base building shell was the key driver for the concept of the laboratory. Demonstrating how cellular spaces can be repurposed for research functions, allowed for improved open and enclosed work areas that enable collaborative, adaptable and dynamic learning environments. The design successfully utilises the opportunities for collaboration between staff and students.
